The 60-day rule
The rule is simple, but the result is surprising: the passport’s validity period determines the duration of the permit. If your passport expires in 24 months, you can apply for a two-year permit, but the permit issued will be valid for approximately 22 months—because the permit is issued for a period at least 60 days shorter than the passport’s validity.
For this reason, it is often better for people requesting an extended leave of absence to renew their passport first.
