SHORT ANSWER
For a long-term residence permit, the eight-year period must be continuous. Days spent abroad may interrupt this continuity. This tool calculates the total of your entry and exit dates and displays the annual breakdown.
What are the limits?
Three separate metrics are used in the assessment: the duration of continuous stay, the total over one-year periods, and the total over the past five years. Exceeding one limit does not necessarily mean that the others have also been exceeded.
Even after obtaining a long-term residence permit, staying abroad for more than one year without interruption—except in cases of force majeure—may result in the revocation of the permit.
Be careful when counting the days
Whether departure and arrival dates are included in the count is not governed by a single written rule. For accounts held at the border, the two methods may yield different results.
Therefore, if the result is close to the threshold, it must be evaluated in conjunction with the official records of entries and exits.

The continuity assessment does not consider only the days spent abroad. Days spent in Turkey without a valid permit are also included in the calculation.
For this reason, the assessment that “I was abroad for four months; there’s no problem” may be incomplete: if a person remains in the country without authorization for three months immediately following a four-month trip, the combined duration increases to seven months.
It is not counted twice on the same day; the portion of the leave period that overlaps with travel abroad is not counted separately as an unauthorized absence.
